A Royal Escape to Mayurbhanj: Where Heritage, Art, and Heart Converge

Just four hours from the bustling city of Calcutta lies Mayurbhanj, a serene and storied corner of northern Odisha that feels like stepping into another era. My recent journey to this regal haven unfolded like a gentle dream — one wrapped in heritage, hospitality, and the quiet charm of nature.

A Palace That Breathes History

The moment I arrived at the magnificent Belgadia Palace, I felt enveloped in warmth. The gracious welcome by the hosts and the palace’s timeless ambience set the tone for a stay unlike any other. Perched amid lush mango orchards that seem to stretch endlessly, the palace stands as a proud custodian of Mayurbhanj’s royal legacy.

Every corridor, every arch, every room seems to hum with stories of a bygone time.

My retreat was the majestic Ruby Room, glowing in rich crimson hues. With its elegant four-poster bed and royal detailing, the room made me feel cocooned in luxury and nostalgia — the kind that lingers long after the journey ends.

Moments with the Royal Family

What elevated this experience was the company I found — warm conversations, shared laughter, and gracious companionship with the royal family and friends. A highlight of the trip was a heritage walk guided by Princess Mrinalika Bhanj Deo, whose effortless grace and deep knowledge brought the palace and its stories alive in an intimate, unforgettable way.

Weaving Stories at Baripada Looms

Another memorable experience was visiting the Baripada looms, where women artisans weave not just fabric, but heritage. Their dedication, skill, and quiet strength echoed stories of resilience and cultural pride. Walking through this space, one could feel the pulse of Odisha’s craft legacy.

A Personal Touch of Art

Among the many special moments at Belgadia Palace, spotting one of my own curated artworks — “The Peacock” from @northernart11 — adorning the palace walls felt deeply heartwarming. To see art find a home where heritage thrives was a joy beyond measure.

A Journey to Return To

Mayurbhanj is not just a destination — it is an experience shaped by history, hospitality, and heartfelt connection. From the palace’s timeless charm to the cultural richness that surrounds it, every moment felt like a celebration of India’s royal and artistic soul.

I cannot wait to return — this time, with my family — to relive the magic and make new memories in this enchanting corner of Odisha.
